New Music Workshop gives upper-level students at the University of Windsor School of Music an opportunity to explore different aspects of new music (composition, performance, improvisation, analysis and interdisciplinary work) within a community of collaborators. Founded in 2006, the NMW has given more than twenty performances of student compositions, contemporary masterworks, and improvisations. Central to the New Music Workshop are the commitments to musical diversity, experimentation, and collaboration.

2008 events included a program of the music of Frederic Rzewski, a program of improvisational works directed by artist-in-residence Rodney Sharman, the third annual Phunk Phest at Phog Lounge, and several concerts of student compositions.

Participation in the New Music Workshop is open to students who have completed Music Theory IV (32-213) or by permission of the instructor.

Drive Thru Symphony
2009.09.23: New Music Workshop participants will perform during the Green Corridor Project's Drive Thru Symphony, an installation of sound, images, and sculpture along Huron Church Road between College and Millen. Audience members are invited to walk through the installation or drive through listening to a simulcast on CJAM radio.

Twitch (in time)
2009.10.01: Studio A, 7:30 pm. New Music Workshop participants will perform improvisational works prepared during a music improvisation workshop with renowned percussionist and music educator Bill Cahn. The workshop and performance are part of a Windsor residency by the Nexus Percussion Ensemble.

Five ideas about the Relation of Sight and Sound
2009.11.12: Studio A, 7:30 pm. The NMW will assist artist-in-residence Virgil Moorefield as he presents his recent inter-media work Five Ideas About the Relation of Sight and Sound, a performance piece in five tableaux that explores facets of the the interplay between image and sound.

2010.03.04: Studio A, 7:30 pm. The New Music Workshop presents a recital of recent student compositions as part of the 13th Windsor Canadian Music Festival.
